Subtlety Issues

Now that I am home and pretty jobless, I seem to have loads of time to spend. Not too unusual as its just like any other vacation, in fact summer hols used to last for about 3 months! The only difference is that now, I know that I am definitely not returning back to campus, and have no sense of purpose, as of now. Disturbing though it may be, that doesn’t change the fact that I still have the entire days and sleepless nights to kill (I am mostly insomniac. I sleep only once in 2-3 days, that too during early mornings or noons only! :P Old habits die hard, I guess.). So, now I am into watching movies and a few dumb weepy illogical storyless tamil serials on TV. Well, living with 3 adults who could compromise anything but tamil serials for me, I don’t have much of a choice, considering the fact that I m kinda taking it slow in watching all the movies and series I got from d campus due to fear of running out of them. :D Nevertheless, I watch re-runs of a few of the old fantasy movies and Smallville now and then, when I get too sick of TV. Seriously, they hardly screen anything watchable. But occasionally, a few good ones do get shown, for which I fight for happily and watch.

But if there is anything that I have realized, it is that it is too damn hard to watch a good movie in a house with 3 adults!! One kissing scene and I HAVE TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL! Else THEY WILL!!! If no one does, then there will me my dad giving me looks of disapproval, my mom giving me shocked looks that say, ”Oh my! Why is she watching such movies? Doesn’t she have anything good left in her? Has Pilani taken them all away?!?” and then she would get up and walk away, careful not to make eye contact. But there would me my paati (grand mom), sitting with a smirk on her face, looking at me to check out my reaction. Now she would have loads to talk to the relatives!! You can actually see her hiding her wicked grin and turning away, shaking her head, and nonverbally exclaiming,” Oh!! So this is what she has been upto all these years away from home! Watching indecent movies! Kids these days! :D”. What would they even say if they had a son and they caught them watching porn! Sigh! After all this, anyone would just want to give up on them, switch the channel to some weepy tamil serial, and just LEAVE! Grr.

In our country, ‘falling in love’ with a fellow student/colleague itself is a sin in itself. Expressing it is a crime worth punishing! Absolutely unforgivable!! The whole world believes that marriage is a leap taken by two people in so much love with one another, who wish to spend their entire lives together, a celebration of bonding, a declaration of until-death-do-us-part. The whole world but ours! Here, the whole definition of marriage is different, bonding oneself to a stranger/acquaintance, chosen by one’s parents based on the words of a stranger who draws squares and ‘predicts the future’, so that the two married strangers can live a ‘happily-ever-after’. Outside world-“We are in love, eventually married”. Indian version-“We are married, hence in love”. Why are people here so afraid of expressing love? So uncomfortable of watching even movies that show a girl n a guy holding hands? I do understand the awkwardness in watching your close friends/relatives making out in front of you (have seen a few friends do and felt nauseated), but well, some of the current so-called subtlety rules over watching a nice-sweet-cute-romantic movie really bothers me! Hmph!

  1. You sleep once in 2-3 days eh? Insomnia?

'One kissing scene and I will change channel' --> LOL. In my house, I will not react at all ;-) I will remain normal as if a pooja scene is going on and my parents will stare at each other wondering what I am upto.

'what would they even say if they had a son and they caught them watching porn!' --> What the hell, only guys watch porn eh? ;-)

And, the whole last paragraph - Why don't you write abt this topic in a separate post re... I can talk abt this topic for 5 consecutive days 24/7. Avlo gaaandu.

  3. phew.. so many things in one post.. cant really put everythin in one comment.. lol.. de marriage thing.. unfortunately in this country (atleast in this region) marriage is considered a union of 2 families nd not 2 individuals ...so everyone in the family shud like everyone else on the top of that de stars/gods shud also be happy... in this commotion they forget to ask if the boy likes the gal or vice versa.... namma llam romba pavam.. :(

but since u r a guy, i guess they might even consider listening to ur opinion, though how it might change the way, i really dont know. :P

  6. I think this is one thing every parent is aware of. And afraid of.
Things will always be better with time. You generally got to ease these things into their eyes. So one day they don't go 'Oh No! What happened to my baby!'
Times are changing, and its about time they got updated firmware.
    :D

  14. used to change the channel, but gradually eased my parents into being comfy with watching such scenes - besides, the saas-bahu series are much more scandalizing... everyone has slept with everyone else in the house! So mom can be tackled by that example... dad was anyways more accepting, so no issues there.

Btw, falling in love and expressing it is more acceptable these days aint it? everyone is generally too busy to notice. And the one who have tie to notice are jobless, therefore their opinion doesn't count :D

  15. oh i dont evn wnna get strtd on tamilian arranged marriages...its quite a joke... funny thing is all these ppl r so involved in these serials, all of which show the protagonists falling in love n getting married, but still they would cringe on seeing something like tht happening in their own families...i wonder why they watch those stupid soaps in such an engrossed manner if they dont take away anything from them...maybe they watch it cos they get inspiration frm the "evil" mum-in-laws shown in them...though im sure theyll b more ready to step on horse-crap than admit that :P

  17. @ ulaganath: i knoww!!! seriously!
but well, i really cant say wat or why ppl even watch tamil serials, but as far as english ones tat i usually watch are concerned, they r a gud timepass, some r really addictive, n most of all, i guess, watching things relly happen tends to make up for my mundane life and and watching others' bigger problems like meteor freaks trying to kill someone or a serial killer on loose makes my problems feel smaller and helps forget the bitter life!
but well, i guess one jus cant live in them all d time!:)

  21. LOL reminds of the time i took my grandmom's sis and her son (my uncle) to the movies and the first ad that came on was a kamasutra condom's!

but then i guess it depends on who u r watching it with. having to watch too much PDA in real life does leave u feeling nauseated, but in the movies it may depend on ur wavelength with the ppl u watch it with. many of us are okay with watching it wtih friends and/or partners... but possibly not of those from a different generation. yehi hai india, meri jaan! will take a bit for that mindset to change and the hush hush whispers to go...

but in the meantime.. ur frustration is understandable. and no, LOL, ur college doesnt really have anything to do with it (unlike what ur parents may think!) :-)
